My Wi-Fi or my printer won’t cooperate

Making the Wi-Fi reach the whole house

The Wi-Fi is excellent in the living room, less so in the kitchen, and non-existent in the upstairs bedroom. You add a repeater, it improves a little, then it starts again. There is a better way.

What is actually going on

A repeater takes an already weakened signal and rebroadcasts it weaker still, usually creating a second network between which devices hesitate. That is why you can appear connected while nothing loads.

A mesh network works differently: several units form one single network, and your devices move between them without noticing. In a house over three floors, that is the difference between “it depends which room” and “it works everywhere”.

What we do

  • Measure the actual coverageRoom by room, before buying anything. Sometimes simply moving the router is enough.
  • Install a properly designed mesh networkThe right number of units, in the right places, on one network name.
  • Put the router back in orderIncluding resetting the Swisscom router when the connection plays hide and seek.
  • Reconnect the whole houseMac, iPhone, iPad, television, printer, speakers: every device goes back onto the right network.

Before we arrive

What helps

  • Note in advance which rooms lose signal — it speeds up the diagnosis.
  • Have your current network name and password to hand.

What is better avoided

  • Stacking repeaters from different makes: that is what creates the dead zones.
  • Hiding the router in a closed cupboard or behind the television.

Your questions

How many units do I need?

Two are often enough for a Geneva flat, three for a house over three floors. We measure before advising, rather than selling by weight.

Do I need to change internet provider?

Almost never. In the great majority of cases the speed arrives perfectly well at the router — it is the distribution inside the home that fails.
