Screen Time and parental controls

Setting limits on a child’s iPhone is not a software matter: it is a family decision that the settings then enforce. The settings simply have to hold, and not be worked around in two minutes.

What is actually going on

Apple includes everything needed: time per app, allowed hours, content restrictions by age, purchases requiring a parent’s approval. It is all steered from your phone — provided the child has their own account within the family group.

That is where most setups fail: a child using a parent’s Apple ID cannot be supervised, because the system takes them for an adult. Parental controls therefore begin with a genuine child account.

What we do

  • Put the framework in placeA child account, the family group, and a Screen Time passcode known only to the parents — not the device passcode.
  • Set the screen timePer app and per time slot, with the exceptions that make sense: calls, homework, reading.
  • Filter the contentAge-appropriate restrictions, specific sites blocked, purchases subject to your approval.
  • Explain it to both sidesTo the parents so they can adjust it themselves, and to the child so the rule is understood rather than endured.

Before we arrive

What helps

  • Agree the rules as a family before the visit: the technology enforces a decision, it does not make it.
  • Choose a Screen Time passcode different from the device’s unlock code.

What is better avoided

  • Using the same Apple ID for yourself and your child.
  • Setting restrictions without discussing them: they will be worked around, and trust will suffer.

Your questions

Can my child switch the limits off?

Not without the Screen Time passcode, and provided their account is properly attached to the family group. That is precisely what we verify before leaving.

Does it work on the Mac too?

Yes, with the same settings across Mac, iPhone and iPad. The limits follow the child from one device to the next.
