My Mac is locked by a password
A Mac that refuses your password at startup is unsettling — especially when you are certain you typed it correctly. Depending on which screen you are looking at, the fix takes five minutes or needs a proper procedure.
What is actually going on
A Mac has several separate locks and they have nothing to do with one another: the login password, the encrypted disk (FileVault), and the firmware password that sits before the system even starts. People mix them up, understandably — the screens look alike.
What changes everything is your Apple ID. If it is linked to the Mac, it often serves as the spare key. If not, on an encrypted machine you need the recovery key — the one you were asked to write down on day one.

- Reinstalling macOS to “start clean”: on an encrypted disk you would lose everything.
- Repeating attempts at startup — some locks lengthen the delay after each failure.

Can a Mac always be unlocked?
Almost always for a login. Not always for a firmware password without proof of purchase: Apple protects that case deliberately, and it is what makes a stolen Mac useless.
Will my data survive?
