Family Sharing and iCloud for your children

Apple’s Family Sharing lets the whole household use the same purchases, the same storage plan and the same protections — with one adult keeping the reins. It just has to be set up in the right order.

What is actually going on

The principle is simple: one adult organises the group and up to five other people join. Apps, the iCloud plan and music are shared, but everyone keeps their own account, their own photos and their own messages.

The classic trap is a child using a parent’s Apple ID. Everything blends together: photos, messages, appointments. Creating a proper child account within the family group puts everyone back in their own home.

What we do

  • Create the children’s accountsOne Apple ID per child, attached to the family group, with the age declared correctly so the protections apply.
  • Untangle what has become mixedPhotos, messages and contacts that ended up on the wrong account: we separate them without losing anything.
  • Sort out sharing and storageShared purchases, a shared iCloud plan, and location between family members if you want it.
  • Show you where all this is steered fromThe setting is three clicks away once you know where to look. We show you, and you stay independent.

Before we arrive

What helps

  • Gather the family’s existing Apple IDs and passwords before the visit.
  • Decide in advance who organises the group: that account carries the purchases.

What is better avoided

  • Giving a child your own Apple ID: their messages and photos would land on your phone.
  • Declaring a false age when creating the account — the child’s protections depend on it.

Your questions

Will my children see my photos?

No. Family Sharing shares purchases and the storage plan, not personal libraries. Everyone keeps their own photos and messages.

What about parental controls?

They are set straight afterwards, child by child. We cover them in detail on the page about screen time and restrictions.
