Cleaning your Mac,properly
Search for “clean my Mac” online and you will find a hundred apps promising to fix everything in one click. Most slow down the machine they claim to cure, and some are frankly malicious.
What is actually going on
A Mac does not clog up like a chimney. What slows it down has precise causes: a disk close to full, software launching at startup without your knowledge, a photo library reindexing itself, or a system far newer than the machine carrying it.
Cleaning properly therefore means working out which of these applies to you. An automatic app cannot know: it deletes files according to its publisher’s rules, and now and then it takes something useful with it.
What we do
- Measure before touching anythingWhat fills the disk, what starts at login, what eats the memory. We look first.
- Empty what should be emptiedDamaged caches, duplicate libraries, old iPhone backups forgotten on the disk, installers never removed.
- Uninstall the fake cleanersMacKeeper, Advanced Mac Cleaner and their cousins do not remove themselves cleanly. We take them out completely.
- Tell you what cleaning will not doIf the machine is simply too old for its system, no amount of cleaning changes that. We would rather say so.
Before we arrive
What helps
- Leave the Mac switched on and plugged in during the visit: some operations take time.
- Tell us which apps you actually use, so we leave the essentials alone.
What is better avoided
- Installing an “optimiser” found in a pop-up window — it is often the problem itself.
- Deleting files in the system library on the strength of an online tutorial.
Your questions
Does cleaning really make a Mac faster?
When the cause is a full disk or startup software, yes, noticeably. When the cause is the age of the hardware, no — and we will tell you before, not after.
What tools do you use?
Recognised tools and the system’s own commands, not consumer products. And nothing is deleted before we have looked at what it is.
