Forgotten Apple ID password

It is the single most important password of your digital life, and it is also the one people forget most. The good news: an Apple ID can almost always be recovered, and your photos are waiting patiently behind it.

What is actually going on

Your Apple ID is the email address that opens iCloud, the App Store, iMessage and your backups. When the password goes missing, nothing is deleted — the door is simply closed until you prove it is you.

Apple offers several ways back in: another device still signed in, a trusted phone number, a rescue address, or a recovery procedure that takes a few days. Which one applies depends on what you have to hand — and that is exactly where people give up.

What we do

  • Work out the right way back inAn iPhone still unlocked in a drawer beats a week of waiting. We look at what you have before anything else.
  • Reopen the account with you, not for youYou type the new password yourself. The account stays yours, and nobody else knows it.
  • Sign all your devices back inMac, iPhone, iPad: each one asks again after the change. We go round them all, otherwise photos quietly stop syncing.
  • Set up a fallback for next timeTrusted number, recovery contact, a note kept somewhere sensible. Two minutes that spare you the whole thing again.

Before we arrive

What helps

  • Look for any Apple device still signed in to your account, even an old iPad at the back of a drawer.
  • Write down the exact email address you use as your Apple ID.

What is better avoided

  • Trying one guess after another: after several failures the account locks properly.
  • Creating a new Apple ID to “start fresh” — your purchases and photos would stay on the old one.

Your questions

Will recovery erase my photos?

No. Recovery reopens access, it does not touch content. Your photos, contacts and documents are in iCloud and come back as soon as you sign in.

How long does it take?

Minutes, if a trusted device is available. Otherwise Apple imposes a security delay that can run to several days — we start the procedure with you and follow it through.
